Lee Enterprises Appoints Pamela J. Browning Publisher in Carlisle

September 23, 2002
CARLISLE, Pa., Sep 23, 2002 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Pamela J. Browning, advertising director at the Asheville Citizen-Times in North Carolina, will join Lee Enterprises (NYSE:LEE) as publisher of The Sentinel in Carlisle.

Michael Phelps, Lee Enterprises vice president for publishing, introduced her to the newspaper staff today.

"When you're jotting down things to like about P.J.," he said, "you'll need a big piece of paper, and you might even begin with her e-mail address: iloveads@aol.com. In her 18 years at newspapers in four states, she's won a battalion of fans and followers for her leadership, enthusiasm and achievements, particularly in sales and marketing, but also for her contributions in all areas of the newspapers and in the communities."

She succeeds Wayne Powell, who resigned to become publisher of the Journal Tribune in Biddeford, Maine.

Browning began her newspaper career in 1984 while earning a degree in marketing at Southwest Missouri State University, joining the News-Leader in Springfield. During her 12 years at the newspaper, she advanced from part-time classified sales to retail advertising sales manager. In 1996 she was promoted to advertising director at another Gannett Co., Inc., newspaper, the Coloradoan in Fort Collins. In 1998, she became retail advertising director at the Grand Rapids Press in Michigan, a Newhouse newspaper, before being recruited back to Gannett in 1999 in Asheville.

She has been involved in many community and professional organizations throughout her career. In Asheville, she is active in the chamber of commerce, Home Builders Association of Greater Asheville, the board of Realtors and Kiwanis, where she served as chair of marketing for the Biltmore Estate 15K annual race. She also is a member of the Newspaper Association of America. She and her husband, Kerry, have three children.

"P.J.'s experience, enthusiasm, fire for the business and competitive spirit will all be needed in Carlisle where our enterprise competes with a metro daily and publishes free weekly newspapers and saturate advertising publications as part of "Sentinel Country" strategy," Phelps said.

The Sentinel, along with 15 other newspapers formerly owned by Howard Publications, became part of Lee Enterprises in April. With the acquisition, Lee owns 39 daily newspapers and a joint interest in six others, along with associated online services. Lee also owns more than 175 weekly newspapers, shoppers and classified and specialty publications. Lee is based in Davenport, Iowa, and its stock is traded on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol LEE. More information about Lee Enterprises is available at www.lee.net.
