Lee Enterprises Appoints Joyce Dehli VP for News
DAVENPORT, Iowa--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 24, 2006--Joyce Dehli, director of editorial development for Lee Enterprises, Incorporated (NYSE:LEE), has been appointed vice president for news.
Mary Junck, Lee chairman and chief executive officer, said Dehli will work with Lee's 58 daily newspapers, as well as with Lee's 100-plus weekly newspapers, to provide leadership and resources to help them deliver strong local news and quality journalism to their growing online and print audiences.
"With the rapid growth of our online sites, our newspapers reach more people today than ever before, giving us new opportunities to meet more needs of more diverse audiences," she said. "As we've seen over her career and especially in her most recent role as director of editorial development, Joyce brings extraordinary skills, knowledge and passion, as well as a welcomed and respected leadership style. We're delighted to have her as our vice president for news."
Dehli succeeds David Stoeffler, who has taken a leave of absence from the company for personal considerations.
"I am thrilled for the opportunity to work with Lee's newsrooms to make our newspapers and online sites even more essential to our communities," Dehli said. "Quality is the key, and that means powerful local journalism, credible and well-told, that serves the public's interests. We're watchdogs. We connect the people in our communities. We keep them informed - in print, online, every day. We make a difference in their lives. What could be more rewarding?"
As director of editorial development since April 2005, Dehli has been responsible for Lee's journalism training programs and providing other support to its newsrooms. She joined the corporate team in October 2004 as editorial training manager, a position in which she helped many Lee newsrooms improve their enterprise journalism and planning processes.
Previously, she was managing editor of the Wisconsin State Journal in Madison, where she earlier held a variety of editing and reporting positions. Also in her career, she reported for the Courier-Journal and The Louisville Times in Louisville, Ky. Her work, alone or as part of a team, has been recognized with more than 30 national and state journalism awards and honors. She has trained journalists in computer-assisted reporting and ethical decision-making, and has participated in national journalism projects on those topics. She served as co-chair of Lee's Seminars for Assigning Editors in 2003.
Dehli, 47, has a bachelor's degree in journalism from Marquette University in Milwaukee and a master's degree in English literature from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
